Making Your Own Greeting Cards & Gift Wrap From Fox Chapel Publishing is Fascinating

Posted on March 28, 2019 in Reviews women

I love the book:  Making Your Own Greeting Cards & Gift Wrap, which I received from Fox Chapel Publishing.  It’s a great book, with holidays covered, as well.  I’ve been working on some Easter Cards, and have had the help of this book.  All of the Holiday stuff is really gorgeous, especially for this time of year.

Great Things about this book:

  • 50 exciting projects for a wide range of beautiful and fun cards, boxes, bags, wraps, and pouches
  • Each project includes step-by-step illustrations and beautiful color photographs of the finished pieces
  • Includes advice on choosing materials and decorative items to make the most of your cards
  • Has handy templates to assist in both the card and gift wrap-making process
  • Practical instructions guide you through all the techniques used throughout the book
  • Inspirational galleries illustrate how one design motif or tool can be used to create a variety of different results

The step-by-step guides are great.  Even someone that doesn’t do crafts often, like myself, would be able to do these items.  They make it so simple, and even have pages in the back with guides to making some of the projects.  Like there’s an oval, for an Easter Egg.

The projects walk you through the entire process, from beginning to end, with ease. There’s also wedding projects, Halloween projects, which will be perfect for when School starts back up in the Fall, etc.

You need this book, whether you are a crafter or not.  I’m telling you, you will use this book.

Psychiatrist Offers Social Media/Momo Challenge Advice to Parents

Posted on March 28, 2019 in Announcements Momo Challenge Advice

Even though this challenge has been going around now, and I was even warned by the school, here’s a little advice:

If you’re a parent, hopefully you have heard of the Momo Challenge by now. It’s a dangerous “suicide game” that targets children on social media. Some say it’s just the latest internet hoax while others argue it is in fact very real. Either way: it’s an important reminder that parents need to stay on top of their children’s online and social media activity.

Vinay Saranga M.D., a child psychiatrist and founder of Saranga Comprehensive Psychiatry, offers this advice for parents:

  • Keep an eye on what your kids see online: When today’s parents were growing up, the only strangers and dangers they had to watch out for were those in front of them. Social media and the internet are a whole other world and parents needs to be vigilant about what their children are looking at, who they are talking to and what they are doing online. Limit what your kids do on their mobile devices and insist that they only engage on larger screens that you can easily see.

  • You have to enquire: Even if your children are well-behaved or you think of them as the perfect kids who would never get into trouble, you still have to talk to them. Don’t just assume everything is okay or that they aren’t engaging in anything dangerous. You need to be the one to bring it up at the dinner table and educate them about staying safe in today’s online world. Ask them who their online friends are, what games they are playing, what they are viewing, etc.

  • Teaching common sense: It is the job of every parent to instill basic common sense into their children. Let them know that if they encounter something like the Momo Challenge, it is fake, they should tell you about it, close the page or take a screenshot and report it to the police or proper authorities. Teaching kids how to spot danger, scams and other bad things is a lesson they can carry with them for life.

  • Do a mental health check: Just as you would keep an eye on your kid’s physical health, all parents need to stay on top of their children’s mental health. Unfortunately, as we’ve seen from the Momo Challenge, the online world is not all fun and games. Childhood anxiety, depression and online bullying are very real issues these days and must be addressed promptly and properly. Teach your teenagers that if they encounter a friend or classmate who is suicidal, to report it immediately or to call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 1-800-273-8255.

  • Check privacy settings: As parents, you can control the privacy settings on your children’s devices. Make sure they are set to the strictest levels. Don’t forget to check the settings on all phones, computers and tablets. In addition to the actual devices, remember that many social media platforms also have their own set of privacy settings that you can control as well. There are also standalone software products that can help keep your kids stay safe online.

  • Age appropriate guidelines vary: There are all different guidelines for when kids should be allowed to dive into social media and the online world. The best advice is to take it on a case-by-case basis. Generally speaking, the longer parents can delay, the better, as this gives your kids more time to mature. Keep in mind that your 10-year-old might just be more mentally mature than the 12-year-old down the street.

  • Watch the time: Just as you would limit how much TV time your kids get, parents must limit the amount of computer or online time their kids get, too. Encourage your kids to engage more in physical activity, more in-person playtime with friends, sports, books and educational activities. Online and social media time should be limited and reserved for when everything else is done or as an extra special treat.

Welch’s Fruit Snacks, For Easter, Make a Great Snack!

Posted on March 27, 2019 in 2019 Easter Gift Guide kids Reviews

Yesterday was my son’s Annual Spring Party, at School.  I used Welch’s Fruit Snacks, for Easter, as a snack.  They went over great.  The kids all loved them.  With 28 treats in every box, we had enough for the entire class.  We had so much fun, checking out the figures, and flavors.  We even made a game out of it.  You know, who had the most bunnies, or chicks, or reds, or oranges?  It was a snack.  These children are in Second Grade, and so smart!  And, they know what’s good for them!

Welch’s are great for any age though, I even caught my 21 year old trying to steal her brother’s snacks.  It was a hoot.  She loves Welch’s too.

KEY PRODUCT FEATURES:

   * Made with REAL fruit
   * Fruit is our first ingredient
   * Gluten-free
   * No preservatives
   * Fat-free

Welch’s® Mixed Fruit Easter Fruit Snacks are available online at Target.com[2] as well as in-store at Walmart, Target, Walgreens, and other local retailers.

I’ve already gone to Target, and restocked my shelf, with Welch’s Easter Snacks, before they are all sold out.  They are so yummy, and taste just like real fruit, which is the first ingredient.  They won’t last in my house!  Especially sending them in my child’s lunch, and my college student’s lunch, as well.

So, make sure you run out to Target, and buy yours before they are gone.  You can also order them online, at Target.com.

Plus, these Welch’s would be perfect for those Easter Egg Hunts!

Meet New “TOY STORY 4” Characters: Trailer, Poster

Posted on March 23, 2019 in Disney

The toys hit the road in “Toy Story 4” alongside friends—new and old—foes and, of course, Forky. Filmmakers welcomed Christina Hendricks, Keanu Reeves and Ally Maki to the toy box today, revealing the three new characters they help bring to life.

Check out the new trailer and image!

Among the new faces is GABBY GABBY, an adorable, talking pull-string doll from the 1950s. But unfortunately for her, a manufacturing defect in her pull-string voice box has left her sounding anything but adorable. She has spent more than 60 years forgotten in the depths of a jam-packed antique store—her only companions are a band of voiceless ventriloquist dummies. Gabby Gabby knows someone will want her if only she can find a working voice box to repair hers.

Gabby Gabby is voiced by Christina Hendricks. “It became obvious right away that Christina was the perfect actress to play Gabby Gabby,” says director Josh Cooley. “She has the ability to sound inviting and friendly, then subtly become cold and terrifying in just a few words. It still gives me chills when I see Gabby’s introduction in the film. Also, Christina told me that she preferred playing with ventriloquist dummies over dolls as a kid. That’s when I knew it was meant to be.”

DUKE CABOOM is a 1970s toy based on Canada’s greatest stuntman. Riding his powerful Caboom stunt-cycle, Duke is always prepared to show off his stunt poses with confidence and swagger. However, Woody learns quickly that Duke has an Achilles heel: He has never been able to do the awesome stunts advertised in his own toy commercial. For years, Duke has been sitting in an antique store, constantly reliving the failures of his tragic past.

Duke Caboom is voiced by another great Canadian, Keanu Reeves. “The first time Josh [Cooley] and I talked with Keanu about the role, Keanu became Duke Caboom,” says producer Jonas Rivera. “Keanu was asking great questions that dug deep to find the soul of the character. At one point he stood up on the table in the middle of Pixar’s atrium and struck poses while proclaiming victory. It was so funny. It’s all in the movie and it’s all Keanu.”

GIGGLE MCDIMPLES is a miniature plastic doll from the 1980s Giggle McDimples toy line. Giggle is Bo Peep’s best friend. Small enough to perch on Bo’s shoulder, Giggle is Bo’s confidant, supporter and advisor. “Giggle is Bo’s Jiminy Cricket—we’re able to get insight on Bo through their relationship together,” says Cooley. “Giggle is definitely the smallest toy in the Toy Story universe. She’s been stepped on, vacuumed up, and probably put up a kid’s nose in her time.”

Ally Maki voices the tiny character. “Giggle McDimples literally pops on the screen because of Ally’s personality and infectious energy,” says Cooley. “Nobody can laugh like Ally Maki.”

BENSON is a classic, antique ventriloquist dummy, and Gabby Gabby’s right hand. He leads a small group of ventriloquist dummies that serve as Gabby’s henchmen. With no person to give them a voice, these silent toys patrol the antique store with a looming quietness that is inherently unsettling.

“The dummies are, by far, some of the creepiest characters we’ve ever created,” says producer Mark Nielsen. “Our animators really leaned into the truth in materials for how our ventriloquist dummies move. Dummies’ bodies are soft with no structure, so our dummies’ arms just dangle and their legs bend backwards. Throw in their fixed expressions with their wide eyes and big hinged jaws and they’re nightmare material—in the best way possible.”
